The United States Youth Football Association (USYFA) was recently established to provide an avenue for young children (ages 6-17) to be able to participate in an organized sporting event without any registration costs or fees. In addition, Las Vegas Sports Leagues (LVSL), who operates several different football leagues throughout the Las Vegas Valley has created a new division of the LVSL called “Coach Ed Smith’s – GO (Girls Organized) Sports” and is providing youth NFL Flag Football for FREE (there is a small cost of $30 for purchase of uniforms (NFL Jersey, shorts, flags, and mouthpieces), players get to keep these uniforms which can be used in future seasons)!

According to League Owner T.J. Love, the vision for the youth flag football division is based on the principles that Coach Ed Smith lived by. Not only was Coach Ed a pioneer in flag football in Las Vegas, but he truly cared about each and every athlete that he coached, coached against, or just talked to. Coach Ed believed that there was more to playing sports than winning and losing. He believed in and taught Teamwork, Hardwork, and Life Lessons. His first and formost concern was always “His Kids”, that they had fun, gained self confidence, and supported each other. Coach Ed always made sure that every child; regardless of age, race, religion, or athletic ability, was not only given every opportunity to excel but rewarded each athlete accordingly! Coach Ed had an amazing ability to bring out the best in everyone that he came into contact with. Coach Ed may have left us too soon, but his legacy continues.

The LVSL- Coach Ed Smith’s GO Sports began operations in the spring of 2012 getting their feet wet by offering FREE Girls Flag Football with 5 teams participating. They plan on still continuing to offer FREE Flag Football to both Boys and Girls, ages 11-17 in the fall of 2012, followed by a full slate of boys, girls, and co-ed play (ages 6-17) in the spring of 2013. Currently, games will be played on Sunday’s at the All American Sports Park located on Buffalo Drive between Oakey Blvd and Charleston Blvd. They are constantly looking to add different venues so locations may be added in the future.

So the BIG question… How can they offer this opportunity for FREE? It is really quite simple. They have a dedicated staff of volunteers that are working hard to raise money through sales and sponsorships. There are many costs associated with running a youth flag football league such as Insurance, field rental, referee fees, marketing, operations, and equipment. The USYFA and LVSL are working together to support this ideal that today’s young children need a place to go to learn about winning, losing, teamwork, hard work, and to interact with people (both Adults and their Peers) that are all attempting to better themselves and have some FUN!

In addition to the FREE NFL Flag Football, they will assist traveling teams to participate in NFL Regional and National Tournaments as well as other flag football tournaments that they find. They have developed FUNdraising rules and guidelines so that each athlete will be given the opportunity to help raise money to offset expenses related to traveling and competing in tournaments!
