It is with heavy hearts that we report that a local 14 year old youth football player has died on the field.
Issaiah Abrego, 14, collapsed on the field during a game at Ed Fountain last night (Monday April 18th, 2016) just as he turned to make his way to the end zone for halftime snacks & pep talk. A witness stated he was fine one moment and then just collapsed. It took about 2 minutes of bystanders trying to revive him to know something was very wrong. He never regained consciousness after at least 15 minutes of CPR on the field, another 10+ minutes in the ambulance, and another hour in the Pediatric ER at UMC.
What we know is that Issaiah's heart rhythm was abnormal from the moment he was hooked up to a monitor in the ambulance. There were a few times that his pulse was felt and he held an irregular rhythm that was sustainable for as much as 5 minutes but it never lasted.
As of right now the exact cause of death is unknown. Sources said possibilities were anything from underlying viral infection of the heart all the way to brain aneurysm. And if they cannot find something obvious then results of Autopsy can take months.
Friends and family say Issaiah was a kind soul. The kind of teenager you wanted your children to be friends with because as a parent you wanted your child to be more like him. Isaiah never asked for anything without saying Please and Thank You. He was always very kind and loving, even after laying you out on the football field with a solid clean hit... Issaiah always did well in school and excelled in Band. He was always surrounded by his incredible family and friends. Issaiah passed away while playing the game he loved so much.
